1. Nonprofit community organizations rally against Sanitation Department's containerization mandate

Community cleanup organizations and some city councilmembers are pushing back against the city’s mandatory containerization efforts, which would require putting trash into city-approved bins come June 2026.

The Association of Community Employment Programs, or ACE, is a nonprofit organization that sweeps city streets and keeps them clean. They say they’re worried because the new containers cost too much.

2. Simcha Felder projected to win special election for Council seat in Brooklyn

Democratic state Sen. Simcha Felder is the winner of the 44th Council District special election in Brooklyn, Spectrum News projects.

According to the city's Board of Elections, with 98.82% of the vote counted, Felder had 81.69% of the vote, while Republican Heshy Tischler had 17.31% of the vote.

3. Brooklyn sports complex set to close next month

The indoor facility of Aviator Sports Complex at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn will close in less than a month.

Young girls on several gymnastics teams are now looking for a new home.

Management did not provide a reason for the decision to not renew its lease with the National Parks Service, which rents out the building, ending a 22-year partnership.
