Around NYC

1. Real estate industry and executives pour millions into mayoral race

In another time, accepting any cash from the real estate industry would be a faux pas in Democratic city politics.

For many of the candidates, those donations are now welcome. Most of the major candidates for mayor in this year’s Democratic primary are embracing the city’s biggest and potentially most politically powerful industry.

2. Gov. Hochul likely to win cellphone ban in state budget

Although it’s looking like Gov. Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders won’t make their April 1 budget deadline, they appear to be in agreement on a big-ticket item for the governor: an all-day ban on cellphones in schools, known as “bell-to-bell.”

“The majority of the members are more comfortable with a bell-to-bell approach, they really are,” state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, a Westchester Democrat, said.

3. Bills reshaping scaffolding rules set to become law

In a series of bills passed Wednesday, lawmakers are reshaping how scaffolding looks and the length of time it can stay up.

The bills will cut down permit time from one year to three months, increase lighting and allow more color options, rather than the hunter green that’s become synonymous with the structures.
