1. 10 teens injured in shooting outside Queens event space, police say
Ten teenagers were injured late Wednesday night when unidentified gunmen opened fire outside a crowded event space in Queens, officials said.
The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. on 144th Place in Jamaica, where a private event at Amazura was underway. Roughly 90 people were inside the venue, which police said was operating at capacity. A line of about 15 people had formed outside when the attack began.
2. Federal agents raid home of former NYPD chief of department
The home of former NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey has been raided by federal agents. Multiple people, including one in an FBI shirt, were seen leaving Maddrey's home this morning.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, in a statement posted to X, said Maddrey has been suspended from the NYPD, and that the department is working with authorities to investigate allegations against him.
3. Man charged with breaking into Gracie Mansion on New Year's Day
A man was arrested after he allegedly broke into Gracie Mansion and stole a Christmas ornament on New Year’s Day, prosecutors said.
Surveillance footage showed the 20-year-old climbing over a fence outside the mayor’s official residence on the Upper East Side just before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a complaint filed with the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
4. City finalizes rules to let property owners install e-bike charging stations on sidewalks
New York City has finalized rules aiming to reduce lithium-ion battery fires by expanding access to safer e-bike charging stations.
Starting Feb. 1, property owners and tenants can apply to install battery swapping and charging cabinets on sidewalks in front of their properties, the city’s Department of Transportation announced today. The cabinets are part of the Adams administration’s “Charge Safe, Ride Safe” plan to combat lithium-ion battery fires.
5. Gillibrand to join Senate Appropriations Committee in new Congress
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced today she will be joining the Senate Committee on Appropriations in the next Congress, which is set to convene on Friday.
The panel in Washington’s upper chamber oversees federal spending and allocates funding to programs and government agencies.
6. FBI now says New Orleans truck attacker acted alone in an 'act of terrorism'
A U.S. Army veteran who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year's revelers in New Orleans had posted videos to social media hours before the carnage saying he was inspired by the Islamic State group and expressing a desire to kill, the FBI said today.
Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI's counterintelligence division, said during a news conference that Shamsud-Din Jabbar acted alone.
7. Man shot himself in head before Cybertruck exploded outside Trump's Las Vegas hotel, officials say
The highly decorated Army soldier inside the Tesla Cybertruck that burst into flames outside President-elect Donald Trump's Las Vegas hotel shot himself in the head before the explosion and likely planned to cause more damage, but the explosive was rudimentary and the steel-sided vehicle absorbed much of the force, officials said today.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference that a handgun was found at the feet of the man, who officials believe is Matthew Livelsberger. Officials believe the shot was self-inflicted.
