Today's Big Stories
1. Columbia activist's lawyers appear in New Jersey court over jurisdiction of his case
Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student facing deportation for his role in pro-Palestinian campus protests, urged a federal judge today to free their client from an immigration detention center in Louisiana, describing his imprisonment there as a “Kafkaesque” ploy to chill free speech.
The parties appeared this morning before a judge in Newark, New Jersey, to debate where Khalil’s legal fight to be released from federal custody should play out.
2. Lawsuit over deadly East River helicopter crash ends with $90M settlement
Relatives of a man who died when a sightseeing helicopter crashed and sank in the East River have settled a lawsuit for $90 million, agreeing to reduce a jury award in order to foreclose appeals and end the case.
Court records show a Manhattan judge approved the settlement Wednesday in the wrongful death case of Trevor Cadigan, seven years after he died at age 26.
3. Mamdani makes case for generational change in NYC mayoral race
With fewer than 100 days before voting begins in the New York City primary, NY1 is sitting down with candidates running for mayor.
Today, Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani joined “Mornings On 1” to make his case to voters.

4. Analysis: Keeping Stefanik in the House has benefits for Trump and the GOP
On Thursday, President Donald Trump withdrew Rep. Elise Stefanik's nomination for the role of U.N. ambassador, citing concerns about plundering another Republican from the House of Representatives when the party’s majority in the chamber is extremely thin — and during a crucial time for Trump to enact his agenda.
So Stefanik will remain in her seat representing New York’s 21st Congressional District, but that might be a good thing for Trump and Republicans — and not just because of the numbers.
5. New York City music scene stars pay tribute to their influences
A compilation record from a label started by the founder of international punk band Gogol Bordello features original music and renditions of classics from bands like Sonic Youth, Talking Heads and Velvet Underground.
To celebrate the record, many of the artists will perform at the Bowery Ballroom on April 5, in a show that features special guests like actress Vera Farmiga and her band The Yagas.
6. Irish dance troupe comes to Radio City Music Hall
The Irish dance troupe Riverdance is back in the Big Apple, celebrating its 30th anniversary with performances at Radio City Music Hall.
Two of the troupe's dancers joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry on "News All Day" to talk about the anniversary tour — and teach a few dance moves.
