1. Adams signs legislation to remove sheds, scaffolding
Mayor Eric Adams signed several pieces of legislation today to address scaffolding issues across New York City.
The new legislation establishes new penalties, pushes property owners to complete building repairs within a timely manner and remove sheds more quickly, according to a news release.
2. MTA to boost service along 16 local bus routes
Service enhancements are coming to 16 local bus routes in four boroughs starting June 29, Gov. Kathy Hochul and the MTA said today.
Bus lines in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are set to run faster, making commutes and wait times shorter for New Yorkers.
3. Con Edison upgrading power infrastructure to meet Long Island City's growing population
Con Edison's new $125 million project to upgrade its power infrastructure will feed more power to the areas in and around Long Island City to meet the higher demands from a growing population.
In 2010, Con Edison had roughly 36,000 customers in the LIC area. Last year, it had more than 54,000 customers — a jump of nearly 50%.
4. NY1 to host key debates in leadup to 2025 NYC primary election
Spectrum News NY1 will be hosting a Democratic mayoral debate and a Democratic debate for city comptroller in the leadup to the city's primary elections on June 24.
The two debates will air live on Spectrum News NY1 at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 12. Viewers will also be able to watch for free on Spectrum News NY1’s online platforms.
5. Dozens more possible jurors are screened in Weinstein retrial
Dozens more people are undergoing screening today as potential jurors for Harvey Weinstein's New York rape retrial.
The panel started taking shape Wednesday, when five women and four men were picked for the redo of the landmark #MeToo-era trial. They were chosen after several stages of screening and questioning, a multistep process that's common for long felony trials in Manhattan.
6. New York private sector jobs up 5,600 in March, report says
The number of private sector jobs in New York increased by 5,600, or 0.1%, in March, according to preliminary seasonally adjusted figures released today by the state Department of Labor.
These put the total number of private sector jobs in the state to 8,464,400 in March. The number of private sector jobs in the U.S. increased slightly higher in the same period, at 0.2%, the department said.
