1. DSNY to open compost giveaway site in Queens amid 'record' collection
Nearly three weeks after the city began enforcing mandatory curbside composting, the Department of Sanitation is telling Queens locals to come reap their rewards.
Starting Wednesday, April 23, residents in Queens will have a new, local option to get their hands on free compost for their gardens, courtesy of DSNY. The city agency is opening a compost distribution site in Astoria, joining existing sites in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
2. Memorial grows in Washington Heights for victims of Santo Domingo roof collapse
A memorial for the hundreds of people killed last week in a roof collapse in Santo Domingo continues to grow in the square outside the United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights.
Dominican music legend Rubby Pérez, who performed at the theater many times, was among those killed in the collapse.
3. Ex-aide settles with state over liability for former Gov. Cuomo's alleged sexual harassment
A onetime aide to former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state have settled a lawsuit she had filed against the state claiming as her employer it was liable for Cuomo’s alleged sexual harassment and for the actions of his top aides, who failed to take corrective action once she reported it.
Bennett, who became the second woman to publicly accuse him of misconduct, claimed Cuomo subjected her to invasive questions about her personal life and sexual relationships, and once told her he was “lonely” and wanted a girlfriend who lived in Albany, according to the state lawsuit, which she filed in March 2023.
4. State senator criticizes Trump move to halt Brooklyn wind project
During an inteview on "Mornings On 1" today, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes sharply criticized the Trump administration’s move to halt construction on a major offshore wind project based in his Brooklyn district.
The Empire Wind One project, located at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, was expected to power over 500,000 homes starting next year. Originally approved in 2017 under the Trump administration, the project is now in limbo as the U.S. Department of the Interior seeks to re-review construction plans.
5. Harvey Weinstein can stay in hospital during #MeToo retrial, judge rules
Harvey Weinstein has been moved to a city hospital after a judge approved the ailing ex-studio boss’s request to stay there rather than in jail when he’s not in court for his #MeToo retrial.
Judge Paul Goetz late Thursday ordered that Weinstein be immediately relocated from the city’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex to the prison ward at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan so he can receive necessary medical treatment.
6. Judge denies Sean 'Diddy' Combs' request to delay May 5 trial
The sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs will proceed as scheduled in early May despite his lawyer’s claims that they need an extra two months to prepare, a judge said today.
Judge Arun Subramanian said at a Manhattan federal court hearing that the hip-hop mogul’s trial, projected to last from eight to 10 weeks, will start May 5.
7. Judge pauses Trump administration's plans for mass layoffs at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
A federal judge who blocked President Donald Trump's administration from dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ruled today that the bureau can't go forward immediately with plans to mass fire hundreds of employees.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she is "deeply concerned" that Trump administration officials aren't complying with her earlier order that maintains the bureau's existence until she rules on the merits of a lawsuit seeking to preserve it.
8. Rubio says U.S. will drop Ukraine-Russia peace efforts if no progress within days
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today that the U.S. may "move on" from trying to secure a Russia-Ukraine peace deal if there is no progress in the coming days, after months of efforts have failed to bring an end to the fighting.
He spoke in Paris after landmark talks among U.S., Ukrainian and European officials produced outlines for steps toward peace and appeared to make some long-awaited progress.
