Ten teenagers were injured late Wednesday night when unidentified gunmen opened fire outside a crowded event space in Queens, officials said.
The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. on 144th Place in Jamaica, where a private event at Amazura was underway. Roughly 90 people were inside the venue, which police said was operating at capacity. A line of about 15 people had formed outside when the attack began.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Rivera, three to four males approached the venue and fired at least 30 rounds in the direction of the line. The suspects then fled westbound on 91st Street toward 143rd Place, where they entered a light-colored vehicle with out-of-state plates.
The victims — six females and four males between the ages of 16 and 19 — were taken to local hospitals, where they are all expected to recover.
According to City Councilmember Selvena Brooks-Powers, the event inside was vigil for a 16-year-old who was killed by gun violence in October.
“The celebration of life for Taerion Mungo, a victim of gun violence, should never have ended in this tragedy," she wrote in a statement. “Yesterday’s events serve as a somber reminder that illegal guns must be removed from our streets to ensure a safer New York.”
Police said the shooting is not being treated as a terrorist attack. Investigators are working to identify the suspects and determine the nature of the private event held at the venue.
No arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the NYPD.
