A winter weather alert is in effect Monday across the five boroughs as light snow and cold temperatures have the potential to impact some commutes, the National Weather Service said.
Snow will begin Monday morning and continue into the early afternoon, though most areas won’t see more than an inch, according to the National Weather Service. NY1 meteorologist Guy Brown said southern Staten Island could see the worst of it, with the potential for two inches of snow falling throughout the day.
City officials are advising New Yorkers to take extra precautions during their daily commutes.
“We urge New Yorkers to prepare for a challenging evening commute on Monday, as this winter weather system brings some snow accumulation early in the New Year. The snow will cause slippery road conditions, that will impact drivers and pedestrians,” NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said. “We encourage all New Yorkers to use mass transit, allow for extra travel time, monitor the forecast, and exercise caution.”
Cold conditions will persist into the weekend and next week, with temperatures around five to 10 degrees below normal and daily wind chills in the teens, the NWS said.
In preparation for the wintry conditions, the city said it has already prefilled more than 700 salt spreaders and has begun pretreating roadways and bike lanes with liquid brine.
Additionally, the city’s Department of Social Services has issued a Code Blue Weather Alert for unhoused people because of the cold conditions.
A Code Blue is issued when the temperature or wind chill is forecast to drop to 32 degrees Fahrenheit between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m.
