A messy morning commute is expected across New York City on Thursday as a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain moves through the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all five boroughs beginning at 4 a.m., with around an inch of snow and slush expected to accumulate in most areas.
Snow is expected to develop just after midnight, spreading from southwest to northeast. It will change to a mix of sleet and freezing rain during the morning hours before changing to plain rain by the afternoon, as temperatures rise above freezing.
Hazardous travel conditions are likely, especially on untreated roads and surfaces, the weather service said. The advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m.
Motorists are urged to use caution, as snowy and icy conditions could impact the morning commute.
New York City Emergency Management issued a Weather Alert on Wednesday, and said alternate side parking regulations will be suspended on Thursday.
The agency is urging New Yorkers to "exercise caution when traveling, expect delays, allow extra time, and prepare for slippery conditions."
"Whenever possible, New Yorkers should take mass transit and check for any service changes in advance, the agency said in a release. "Additionally, those driving, biking, or walking should watch for potential icy patches, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads."
The city's Department of Sanitation issued a Winter Operations Advisory. The department will have more than 700 salt spreaders out treating streets, the release said.
