New York state has issued an Air Quality Alert for the five boroughs with hazy conditions expected as a fast-moving wildfire engulfs New Jersey’s Pine Barrens.

The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation and state Department of Health announced Wednesday that the alert will remain in effect through 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

What You Need To Know

  • The air quality index is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, with readings just above 100

  • People with preexisting conditions, older adults and children are recommended to limit their time outdoors to reduce exposure

  • Conditions will be far less severe than they were in June 2023, when the air quality index soared above 400

The air quality index is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, with readings just above 100, according to the federal air quality monitoring website AirNow.

With readings at that level, it’s recommended that people with heart or lung diseases, older adults and children take steps to reduce exposure—including limiting time outdoors and avoiding strenuous activities.

All other groups should not be impacted.

Conditions will be far less severe than they were in June 2023, when the air quality index soared above 400, bringing hazy, orange skies to the five boroughs as wildfires burned in Canada.

New Jersey officials monitoring the wildfire said it has not resulted in any injuries. As of Thursday morning, the fire in Lacey and Ocean townships had grown to more than 20 square miles.

It’s possible the fire could burn for several more days, officials said.

Around 5,000 residents were evacuated but have been permitted to return home.

The Garden State Parkway, one of New Jersey's busiest highways, reopened Wednesday morning after officials closed a roughly 7-mile stretch in the southern part of the state because of the fire.

Acting Gov. Tahesha Way declared a state of emergency early Wednesday as officials said they've contained about 50% of the wildfire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities said.
