Gov. Kathy Hochul met with several key New York leaders Tuesday in an effort to determine the “path forward” for Mayor Eric Adams after four of his top deputy mayors submitted their resignations.
City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander was among those who met with Hochul Tuesday. He signaled in a letter on Monday that he will convene a meeting of the “Inability Committee” if Adams does not meet a Friday deadline for a contingency plan.
“What I asked for is a plan. What is the plan to keep government functioning?” Lander said on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday.
“It would be a lot better if the mayor would resign, let these four deputy mayors stay in place and keep governing the city agencies, but he has to put a contingency plan on the table that shows he’s able to lead,” he added.
Lander said he and the governor discussed the different methods that could be used to remove Adams from office.
“We talked about the Inability Committee and how it would work. We talked about the governor’s ability to remove the mayor and how it would work. Those are complex processes. They haven’t been used before, so no one would do anything lightly here, but the goal is to make sure we don’t have chaos at City Hall.”
When asked if the Inability Committee would be ready to convene, Lander said it’s in “the mayor’s hands” and would depend on how he continues to conduct himself as leader of the city.
