The state budget deadline is fast approaching, but state lawmakers say negotiations are now “at a standstill” and lawmakers are heading home for the weekend.

One of the issues still being debated is a potential mask ban. Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing restrictions on wearing masks in public, citing public safety and a rise in antisemitism.

Some lawmakers, however, say banning masks could hurt people who need it for public health or safety reasons.

Democratic State Sen. James Skoufis introduced a bill that would specifically ban people from menacing or threatening someone with a mask on.

Skoufis, who represents parts of Orange County in the Hudson Valley and serves as chair of the Committee on Investigations and Government Operations, joined “Inside City Hall” Thursday to discuss where negotiations stand.
