The MTA will offer more frequent service along the 1 and 6 train lines on weekends as part of an ongoing effort to roll out service enhancements, the agency said Wednesday.

Weekend trains on the two subway lines will arrive approximately every six minutes instead of every eight minutes starting Saturday, Aug. 12, the MTA said in a news release.

The changes will take effect about a week before Sunday, Aug. 20, when local bus and subway fares are set to increase by 15 cents.

Approximately 285,000 riders take the 1 train on an average weekend day, while approximately 270,000 take the 6 train, the release said.

“It’s no secret that weekend ridership and discretionary travel are rebounding to pre-COVID levels faster than weekdays, and adding more service is going to help us build on that momentum,” MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in a statement.

The MTA said midday N and R train service will also increase later this month, with trains set to show up every eight minutes instead of every 10 minutes.

Weekend service increases went into effect along the G, J and M train lines at the beginning of last month, when the three trains began arriving every eight to 10 minutes instead of every 10 to 12 minutes, the MTA said.

The agency also increased weekday service along the C train line on Monday, it said in the release. Midday C trains began arriving every eight minutes instead of every 10 minutes that day, according to the release.

Additional service increases are set to roll out in December of this year and July of next year, the MTA said.
