The MTA will be testing flood doors at two tunnels during overnight hours over the next few weeks as part of the city’s hurricane and tropical storm preparation, officials said.

The agency says the flood doors will be tested at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and the Queens Midtown Tunnel starting Friday through Aug. 4. 

According to the MTA, the 20-plus ton steel flood doors can only be moved when the tunnel tube is fully closed to traffic.

During the scheduled testing times, one tube of each tunnel will be closed while the other lane remains open to traffic in each direction, the MTA said. 

The flood barriers were installed in 2018 after the tunnels were badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. 

Part of the reconstruction after the storm also included a drainage system to prevent and protect tunnels from future flooding.

Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

• Friday, July 19, from 11 p.m. through Saturday, July 20, at 7 a.m. 

• Monday, July 22, from 9 p.m. through Tuesday, July 23, at 5 a.m.

• Tuesday, July 23, from 9 p.m. through Wednesday, July 24, at 5 a.m.

• Wednesday, July 24, from 9 p.m. through Thursday, July 25, at 5 a.m.

Queens Midtown Tunnel

• Saturday, July 27, from 12:01 a.m. through 8 a.m.

• Sunday, July 28, from 1 a.m. through 9 a.m.

• Saturday, Aug. 3, from 12:01 a.m. through 8 a.m. 

• Sunday, Aug. 4, from 1 a.m. through 9 a.m.
