1. City to hire thousands of new teachers to reduce class sizes
The city will hire more than 3,700 new public school teachers in an effort to reduce class sizes, Mayor Eric Adams said today.
Nearly 750 schools across the five boroughs will see staffing increases during the 2025-2026 school year, Adams said at a news conference.
2. First on NY1: N.Y. House Democrats demand meeting with RFK Jr. over health funding cuts
All 19 New York Democrats in the U.S. House united today in demanding a meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., warning a recent attempt to cut $11 billion in public health grants is endangering their constituents.
In a letter to Kennedy, shared first with Spectrum News NY1, the lawmakers said New York could lose roughly $400 million in health funding if the Trump administration’s effort to rescind funding succeeds.
3. Businesses in Flushing's Chinatown suffer under Trump's tariffs
A large percentage of the population in Flushing, Queens was either born in China or has roots in China — and the stores and restaurants reflect that heritage.
Many businesses that import goods from China are already being squeezed by President Donald Trump's tariffs on imported goods from China.
4. E-ZPass website, Tolls NY app to go offline for six-day upgrade
The E-ZPass website and Tolls NY mobile app will be offline for six days starting tonight, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.
During the downtime, the tolling website will undergo a major upgrade aimed at improving customer service and streamlining account access.
5. City issues 1,885 summonses in first week of composting enforcement
In the first week of enforcement, the city said it issued 1,885 citations to property owners who failed to comply with its new curbside composting rules.
The Department of Sanitation also collected 240% more compostable material during the first week of its crackdown than it did in the same week last year, the agency said.
6. Businessman pitches himself as outsider NYC needs in mayoral race
With weeks until voting begins in the New York City primary, NY1 is sitting down with candidates running for mayor. Today, author and former hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson appeared on “Mornings On 1” to make his case to voters.
Tilson leaned heavily into his business background, saying his corporate experience uniquely qualifies him to lead — especially in the face of economic turmoil brought on by new tariffs from President Donald Trump.

7. S&P 500 soars 7.8% after Trump pauses some of his tariffs
U.S. stocks are surging on a euphoric Wall Street today after President Donald Trump said he would temporarily back off on some of his tariffs, as investors had desperately hoped he would.
The S&P 500 was up 7.8% in afternoon trading. It had been down earlier in the morning amid worries about Trump's trade war and whether it would cause a recession as economists fear. But it spiked immediately after Trump sent the social-media posting that investors have been waiting for.
