1. Report: NYC area could lose 80,000 homes to flooding by 2040

A new report is sounding the alarm about the future of housing and climate resilience across the New York City region, warning that tens of thousands of homes could be lost to flooding in the coming years, compounding the city’s housing crisis.

The study, conducted by the nonprofit Regional Plan Association, estimates that as many as 82,000 housing units in the city, Long Island and Westchester County could be lost by 2040, with that number potentially ballooning to 160,000 by 2070.

2. Iconic Metro Theater to be revived after nonprofit purchase

The long-shuttered Metro Theater on the Upper West Side is getting a new lease on life after two decades.

The Upper West Side Cinema Center bought the historic movie theater at West 99th Street and Broadway for $6.9 million, the nonprofit said in a news release.

3. Supreme Court declines to hear challenge to New York's ban on guns in 'sensitive' locations

The U.S. Supreme Court today declined to take up a challenge to gun laws in New York that ban firearms from certain “sensitive" locations and require that handgun owners be of “good moral character.”

The high court did not give an explanation on why it chose not to hear the case.

4. New Yorkers brace for higher prices as tariffs take effect

Some New Yorkers say they are bracing for price hikes and rethinking how they shop with a sweeping new round of tariffs announced by President Donald Trump now in effect.

The baseline 10% tariff applies to nearly all U.S. trading partners and is expected to ripple through the global economy, affecting consumer goods, groceries, electronics, automobiles and services.

5. Stocks end modestly lower after reeling from Trump's latest threats to escalate tariff fight

Stocks ended another tumultuous day lower as markets reel from President Donald Trump's latest threats to escalate his tariff fight. The S&P 500 sank 0.2% today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 349 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1%.

The Dow was earlier down as many as 1,700 points following even worse losses worldwide on worries that Trump's tariffs could torpedo the global economy. 

6. Mother, 3 kids taken by ICE heading home to upstate New York, officials say

A mother and her three children are returning to the Sackets Harbor area in Jefferson County, New York after ICE removed them from their home during a raid last month and held them in Karnes County Detention Facility in Texas, Assemblyman Scott Gray and the kids' school superintendent said today. 

The announcement was made two days after Sackets Harbor school Principal Jaime Cook blasted ICE's actions in taking the family as "unfathomable" and "unconscionable," and urged for their release in an open letter to the community.

7. MoMA lobby bursts with color in new installation

It's on the must-see list for visitors to New York: The Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA. Now, folks making their way into the museum with one of the world's great collections of modern art will see art before they even reach the galleries.

t's right in the main lobby, a work called "Songs From Life," from artist Odili Donald Odita. NY1's Roger Clark took a look at the installation, which will be on display through the end of 2025.

8. New book helps women navigate menopause

Conversations around menopause have often been seen as taboo, but a journalist and author is empowering women in midlife to get the information they need and thrive during menopause and beyond.
