The NFTA "Ride Nice" campaign, unveiled Friday, increases police presence on the metro rail and inside metro rail stations.
The goal is to take proactive measures ensuring riders feel safe with an overarching campaign that ties in the NFTA code of conduct with informational changes to Metrorail.
“My number one priority is keeping our riders and community safe,” said Kim Minkel, executive director of the NFTA. “We are doing everything in our power to enhance rider experience with a focus on safety and security.”
The Buffalo Peacemakers are partnering with the NFTA and Transit Police to make this possible.
"This is truly a collaborative initiative; I'm pleased to see the NFTA partnering with the Buffalo Peacemakers and the Buffalo Board of Education to unveil this important campaign," said Sen. Tim Kennedy. "By implementing these changes, the NFTA is demonstrating a commitment to improving rider safety and experience throughout the Metro Rail system."
NFTA officials are hoping this makes the metro rail safer and more enjoyable for all passengers. But they are doing this specifically to ensure students get to and from school safely.
"Without giving away all of our strategy, we subscribe to a data driven police method,” Chief Brian Patterson said. “We know where trouble will occur, and if there is trouble, we're there. We also have a prevention strategy, and that is visiting the schools, making sure that all the stakeholders are meeting and collaborating. It is a system we have in place that works."
