Police officers fatally shot a 79-year-old man Tuesday evening after he pointed a firearm at an officer outside an NYPD precinct in Queens, authorities said.

The unidentified man exited a vehicle near the 111th Precinct station house in Bayside around 6:40 p.m. and approached the front of the building, NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said at a news conference. A uniformed officer stationed at the precinct engaged him in conversation before the man suddenly displayed a firearm and aimed it at the officer.

“Additional officers approached and gave additional verbal commands to drop the firearm, but he did not comply,” Rivera said. “After the de-escalation techniques were unsuccessful, four officers discharged their firearms.”

The man was struck multiple times, Rivera said. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene and attempted CPR before EMS transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released his identity.

The officers involved were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

The incident was captured on both body-worn cameras and precinct security footage, which is being reviewed by the NYPD Force Investigation Division, officials said.

Rivera said it remains unclear why the man approached the precinct with a gun.

It was the second police-involved shooting in New York City on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, an NYPD detective was shot during a standoff with a barricaded man inside a Lower East Side apartment.
