The Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster has reopened after being shut down for repairs last month, Luna Park said Saturday.
The city’s Department of Buildings said the ride temporarily closed after operators found a crack on the chain sprocket in its motor room that caused a malfunction.
Several people were removed from the ride upon discovery, but no one was injured, the DOB said.
In a statement provided to NY1 on Saturday, a DOB spokesperson said Luna Park performed several test runs for the ride without passengers over the past few days.
“DOB inspected the ride and determined it was once again safe to return the roller coaster to active operation for the public,” the spokesperson said. “Our inspector who performed the inspection will remain on site this morning to monitor the operations as riders are allowed back on.”
The Coney Island Cyclone, which opened to the public on June 26, 1927, reaches a maximum speed of 60 mph and has a total track length of 2,640 feet, according to Luna Park.
It was designated a New York City landmark in 1988 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
