BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is calling on the NYPD to track the supply chain of illegal fireworks around the borough.
Since May 29, there have been more than 1,300 complaints to 311 of fireworks exploding around the city.
That's an increase of more than 5,000 percent from the same time last year.
Adams wants the NYPD to look into how fireworks are getting into the city.
He's also calling on City Hall to use community based groups.
"But the day to day stopping of using illegal fireworks late at night in an unsafe manner - that is the role of community based groups and organizations. That is why I am calling on the city of new york to empower Cure Violence to go into the community and talk to the residents about the dangers of fireworks but we can't say we're going to empower them and don't write the check," Adams said.
In the past two months, Brooklyn has had the most number of fireworks complaints, primarily in Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Flatbush.
