It's a new venue for a show that made it to Broadway.

Rehearsals are underway at 651 ARTS in Brooklyn with the Rooted Theater Company of the critically acclaimed work from Keenan Scott II called "Thoughts of a Colored Man."

What You Need To Know

  • "Thoughts of a Colored Man" by Kennan Scott II is being performed Feb. 14 and 15 at 651 ARTS in Brooklyn

  • It is a partnership between 651 ARTS and East New York's Rooted Theater Company

  • The show made history in 2021 as the first Broadway play to be written, directed by, starring and lead produced by all-Black artists

It's the story of seven Black men who grew up in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn.

"They all have no names they are all titled by their emotions, throughout the play every individual has a story, it's really about breaking the stereotypes of black men and then also deepening our understanding of what we go through," Kareem Nemley, artistic director of Rooted Theater Company, said.

The show made history in 2021 as the first Broadway play to be written and directed by, starring and lead produced by all Black artists.

It's the first theater production and only second performance in the brand new 651 ARTS theater space at the L10 Arts and Cultural Center, which it shares with three other cultural institutions. It is 651 ARTS' first permanent space in its 37-year history.

"This inaugural season in our new space is all about partnerships and deepening our partnerships and we are really excited to partner with Rooted Theater Company that was on Broadway and closed early due to the pandemic so we are really excited about that," Toya Lillard, executive director of 651 ARTS, said.

The play uses spoken word, slam poetry and rhythm, and is described as a new American play for a new Broadway.

Rooted Theater Company was founded in 2013. It's the only theater company in East New York and is dedicated to producing socially relevant theater based on community experiences.

"We always really strive to listen to what the community is going through both positive and negative and try to find a play that speaks to it specifically or even get new works from playwrights to speak to those subjects," Nemley said.

In this case, it's groundbreaking work getting a run in a brand new venue.
