Sunday school teacher Tameka Nimmons said she felt a sense of unity after attending the Martin Luther King Jr. Day tribute.
“Regardless of what walk of life you come from, there is a need that needs to be answered,” Nimmons said.
The 2,000-seat venue was filled on this day of remembrance.
Attendees, like Elvis Davis, bring Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy to life.
Davis said Dr. King’s tenacity was part of the reason he served in the military. He mentioned that fervor still inspires him.
“With all that’s going on today, everyone is looking for peace and joy,” Davis said.
Some people told NY1 they are the most inspired by the way Dr. King’s messages stand the test of time.
“It’s just a day of real fellowship for all of New York to celebrate,” said Gina Duncan, president of the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
A celebration and tribute instilling the importance of looking beyond our differences.
“We can only go further if we help each other along,” Nimmons said.
One of the teachings that Nimmons said she’ll relay to her students while reflecting after this year’s tribute.
