From the moment you walk into the new Printemps store, you feel like you are in a fancy French apartment.
Floor-to-ceiling windows, pink chandeliers and gorgeous tiling are everywhere. But excuse moi, this is not Paris — this is a new shopping and dining destination at One Wall Street.
“We know this neighborhood used to be not so attractive 10, 15 years ago, but it's changing, right?” said Jean-Marc Bellaiche, CEO of Printemps and a downtown booster. “There is a performing arts center that is bringing a lot of traction. We have Cipriani, we have Tin Building, the Water Street building, and I think Printemps, with Chef Gord and the amazing architecture and offerings here, is also contributing to this neighborhood being more and more attractive.”
Bellaiche lived in the city for 10 years before moving to Paris, so he understands how New Yorkers move about.
He said the open-floor concept — and five restaurants — make it ideal to just drop in, shop, and grab a bite.
“I’m just thinking of it as I’m standing over there shopping. I send my husband over here, and he can help himself to get something to eat. Everyone’s happy!” Bellaiche said.
Down the marble staircase on one side of the store is the Red Room, a stunning shoe salon.
But walk through the main restaurant, and it’s clear that Printemps speaks our language — and is building one big, delicious bridge from Paris to New York.
“Printemps means beauty, right? Because it’s spring. Beauty is very important in our brand. We are a beautiful brand. We are beautiful people — at least at heart. A very generous brand, and we are so happy to make a gift to New York by giving this room to New Yorkers. It was closed for 15 years. It used to be the VIP welcome center of a bank. And now it’s for everyone. Anyone can come in, take pictures, have a little champagne,” Bellaiche said.
