The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will close multiple times overnight beginning Wednesday for work connected to a larger overhaul of the span, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Sunday.

The closures will occur in 15-minute increments between midnight and 4 a.m. on both the upper and lower levels, the agency said. Workers will reopen the bridge to traffic after each 15-minute shutdown.

The closures will allow workers to replace the bridge’s original bearings.

The effort is part of the $145 million renovation the MTA is making to the bridge, replacing much of its original concrete deck and barriers with more durable concrete and a better steel support structure. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge first opened to traffic in 1964.

The first closures will occur March 23-25 and then every three weeks after that until the work is complete. The MTA did not announce the next set of closures.
