New Yorkers will head to the polls this year to elect the next mayor of the city, as well as other positions such as comptroller and public advocate.
Before the primaries in June and the general election in November, there are deadlines for anyone planning to change their party, address or vote by mail.
New York only allows voters who are registered to a party to vote in that party’s primary.
Here are some important dates to know:
- Feb. 14: Last day to change party registration to be effective for the primary election
- Feb. 25-April 3: Dates for circulating petitions
- April 15: First day for signing independent nominating petitions
- May 20-27: Dates for filing independent nominating petitions
- June 9: Changes of address for the primary received by this date must be processed
- June 14: Voter registration deadline for the primary election
- June 14-22: Early voting for the primary election
- June 23: Last day to apply in person for a primary election ballot
- June 24: Primary Election Day. Votes by mail must be postmarked by this day
- Oct. 20: Changes of address for the general election received by this date must be processed
- Oct. 25: Voter registration deadline for the general election
- Oct. 25-Nov. 2: Days of early voting for the general election
- Nov. 3: Last day to apply in person for a general election ballot
- Nov. 4: General Election Day. Votes by mail must be postmarked by this day
