Amid a string of high-prolife violent incidents inside the subway system, president of NYC Transit Richard Davey appeared on “Mornings On 1” Monday to thank transit workers for all they do.
It was a fitting show of gratitude on more than one level, as Monday is National Transit Worker Appreciation Day.
“I think often we don’t appreciate one another’s contributions in society enough: transit workers, police, emergency workers, first responders – so hopefully today is a day to thank our people for what they do,” Davey said.
In light of a rush hour shooting inside a Brooklyn train last week, Davey assured New Yorkers that he, Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul are “laser focused” on safety, and that the subway system remains safe.
“Statistically, crime is down, but I know that is no solace to folks who have seen some of those images. So, our customers need to know we are laser focused on safety in our system,” he said.
The transit chief also said observant straphangers might hear a new announcement ringing throughout the subway system today.
“Hey, New York, Rich Davey here, president of the NYC Transit,” the message begins. “I’m here to tell you that Monday, March 18, is Transit Worker Appreciation Day. Every day 47,000 transit employees come to work to move you and this city 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So, if you see a transit worker today, please join me in thanking them for helping to keep you and our city safely.”
