A Rikers Island inmate died early Tuesday morning, officials said, marking the year's eighth in-custody death.

Donny Ubiera, 33, was found unresponsive in his cell at the George R. Vierno Center around 5:15 a.m., the city’s Department of Correction said.

Responders administered “immediate medical care,” but Ubiera was pronounced dead around 5:50 a.m., the department said.

Ubiera entered DOC custody on March 29, the agency said. His cause of death is under investigation by the city’s medical examiner. The state Attorney General and the city’s Department of Investigation will also investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

His death came weeks after a string of deaths in custody in July.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Legal Aid Society said it had been representing Ubiera.

“Rikers Island has claimed the life of another one of our clients, Donny Ubiera, who died earlier this morning at the George R. Vierno Center,” the statement read. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Ubiera’s friends, family and community at this extremely difficult time.”

“Mr. Ubiera’s family deserves immediate answers from DOC and jail medical staff on the circumstances that led to his death,” the statement added. “All too often, our client’s loved ones are deprived of even the most basic information following the passing of a relative.”
