A Rikers Island inmate died on Sunday, officials said, marking the year's seventh in-custody death and fourth in July alone.
Curtis Davis, 44, was found unresponsive in his cell at the George R. Vierno Center around 5 a.m., the city’s Department of Correction said.
Davis was given medical care before being pronounced dead at approximately 5:37 a.m., the department said.
The city's medical examiner will determine how he died.
Davis entered DOC custody on June 1, according to the department.
His death came a little over a week after another inmate, William Johnstone, died in custody on Rikers Island.
There were 19 city jails-related deaths in 2022, a historic high. That figure includes inmates who were released from custody just before their deaths.
