QUEENS, N.Y. — Two teenagers were injured, one critically, in a stabbing near a high school in Queens Tuesday morning, police said.
The boys, ages 17 and 16, were across the street from John Adams High School in Ozone Park around 10:30 a.m. when they got involved in a fight with an unidentified man and woman, the NYPD said.
During the fight, the unidentified male suspect pulled out a sharp object and attacked the teens, stabbing the 17-year-old multiple times in the abdomen and the 16-year-old in the leg and back, authorities said.
Law enforcement sourced told NY1 the boys were able to flee to the school and told administrators they had been stabbed.
The 17-year-old was then transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, police said. The 16-year-old was transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in stable condition.
In a statement provided to NY1, a spokesperson for the city's Department of Education said the agency was “working closely with the NYPD on their ongoing investigation, and offering additional supports to the students and school.”
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and John Adams provided sanctuary to the two victims and went into a brief shelter-in after an off-campus incident," the spokesperson added.
Authorities released surveillance photos of the male suspect late Tuesday. Police noted that the unidentified woman did not appear to be involved in the incident.
