NEW YORK — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Thursday unveiled a brand new fleet of subway cars.

The first five new R211 cars will start testing over the next few weeks and are expected to start running by next summer.

The initial order calls for 535 new cars, with an option for up to 1,500 over time.

The cars feature wider doors for faster boarding, along with improved digital displays and better lighting.

Twenty of the cars will feature the "open gangway" design, with accordion-like walls at the ends that will allow passengers to freely move between cars.
