“This was just a mess, everybody was jammed up here for hours," said Albert Valdez, as he dropped someone off at the transit hub.
It may be getting a little better though, as the Port Authority and Delta Airlines cut the ribbon on a portion of the new roadway network designed to ease congestion.
Officials say 90% of 8.4 miles of new roads are complete, which includes 26 new bridges meant to eliminate traffic signals that slowed things down up until now.
“One of the great complaints about LaGuardia has been the difficulty of getting around the airport and that is what brings us to today,” said Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton. “Airport traffic jams seem to sum up the travelers' challenges here. And that's why I’m pleased to announce that a whole new LaGuardia is on the verge of having a whole new roadway network."
The roadway was finished six months early - officials said the massive reduction of travel during COVID was a key factor in advancing the construction schedule.
“To help improve traffic conditions which were notoriously difficult here at LaGuardia in advance of the summer 2021 travel season," said Ryan Marzullo, Delta's managing director, NY Corporate real estate.
The Port Authority allotted $625 million for the roadway, part of the massive $8 billion LaGuardia modernization project, much of which is complete, like the new Terminal B.
The next major milestone in this renovation project is the completion of the Delta departures and arrivals hall. It is still is under construction but it is set to be complete by spring of 2022.
Because of that, part of the new roadway still isn’t open to the public, so it’s not time to stop packing your patience just yet.
