NEW YORK — Speed limits will be reduced on 45 miles of streets with some of the highest crash rates in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday.
The push comes as the city tries to combat a spike in traffic fatalities.
The new speed limits will take effect as new signs are posted over the coming weeks. Speed cameras along these corridors will be adjusted and drivers will be given a 60-day adjustment period after the new speed limit signs are installed.
The New York City Police Department will also conduct a “safety blitz” this week in all 77 patrol precincts to crack down on drivers going over the speed limit and failing to comply with traffic laws.
These efforts kick off the city’s "Streets Week!", a package of initiatives surrounding traffic safety, transportation and open space policies that are part of the mayor's “Vision Zero" plan.
“Throughout this week we’re going to be talking about the streets of this city and things were going to do to make them safe and vibrant for the months and years ahead and this is crucial to our recovery,” de Blasio said at a news conference.
The mayor also called on the state legislature to pass the Crash Victims Rights and Safety Act, which includes a bill of rights for traffic crash victims, lowers the blood alcohol concentration limit, and enables the 24/7 operation of speed cameras.
“This act is one of the things that will be part of closing the missing links here, the gaps in the law that still leave too many New Yorkers unsafe,” said the mayor.
“It says to everyone there are consequences for speeding when you put others lives in danger,” he went on to say.
He also urged residents to call their legislators in Albany to pass this law before session ends on June 10.
