“I always say I’ll go do it, then they extend, but this time I think it’s for real,” said Joseph Amechi, who was in line waiting to get inside before the Midtown location opened this morning.
Margaret Rice was also in line. “It’s real for real,” she said.
The select DMV locations in all five boroughs extending their hours to include Saturday mornings are by appointment only.
“I live in East Harlem. I was very lucky to get this appointment today,” Amechi said.
For a breakdown on the types of licenses:
- Standard has your photo but no special markings
- REAL ID has a star on the upper right corner
- Enhanced has an American flag on the top right corner, and for an extra fee can be used for domestic flights and travel across U.S. land and sea borders
New Yorkers applying for the REAL ID should make sure they have all the necessary documents before coming in.
“I’m just here. I did everything online, so I got everything to go, so let’s see how it goes,” said Gil Cerpa, who has a standard license that expires in 2029, and is looking to upgrade to a REAL ID.
New Yorkers with passports can still fly without updating their license.
“I keep my driver’s license with me all the time, and so I don’t have to remember one more thing if I’m going to take flight. And if I have to hunt for my passport, there’s a chance of losing it. I would just rather have something that’s always with me,” Rice said.
“I do travel a lot to Puerto Rico, and other states, so I really need to have it done, as soon as possible,” Cerpa said.
