Relief is coming for the one in seven new mothers who experience postpartum depression after childbirth.

A new pill has been approved by the FDA to help treat the condition. It will be sold under the brand name Zurzuvae and is taken daily for two weeks.

Doctor Kristina Deligiannidis joined “News All Day” on Wellness Monday to discuss this new pill. She’s currently a professor at the Institute of Behavioral Science at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and was an integral part of getting this drug approved.

Dr. Deligiannidis says for mild postpartum depression, therapy is still considered the best course of action. But for severe postpartum, this pill has been shown to make a difference and works quickly.

She says the drug is “working in a way where stress management in the brain is handled. We think that that’s why it’s having its rapid effects.”

Symptoms of postpartum depression include sadness, loss of interest, social withdrawal and loss of appetite.

For those who take the new pill, the doctor says that therapy may still be needed after the 14 days.
