College preparation often starts long before a student fills out an application.

That’s especially true for Oliver Scholars, students chosen in seventh grade to take part in a program that helps them get into high school and supports them through college.

Danielle Cox, CEO of Oliver Scholars, joined “News All Day” on the Women Wednesday segment to share more about the program and her work.

The program focuses on Black and Latinx students in the city who are high achieving. Cox says that these students are 20% less likely to be identified for gifted and talented programs even if their test scores are the same as their White or Asian counterparts.

Students who are chosen for the program take part for two summers and a year of Saturday academy before they go off to their independent and boarding schools.

Cox’s advice for those who are looking to succeed at a high level: follow your passion and work to get good at the thing you care about.
