1. Judge rejects Trump administration’s bid to move Mahmoud Khalil’s legal case to Louisiana
A federal judge has ruled that the legal battle over Mahmoud Khalil’s deportation should continue to play out in New Jersey, rejecting the Trump administration’s bid to transfer the Columbia University protester’s case to Louisiana.
In a written decision Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz in Newark said jurisdiction over the case should remain in New Jersey since Khalil was being held there at the time his lawyers filed their habeas corpus petition demanding his release.

There was a focus on public safety Tuesday in the race for New York City mayor, with two Democratic candidates sharing two very different visions.

3. City schools could miss out on $350 million under proposed state budget
When Gov. Kathy Hochul committed to overhauling the state’s Foundation Aid Formula, advocates hoped it would mean more money for the city’s public schools.
“We’re very disappointed that the conversation has been about changes that would result in New York City schools getting hundreds of millions of dollars less,” Randi Levine, policy director of Advocates for Children, said.
Hochul’s proposed changes to the formula — which determines how much money each school district in the state receives from Albany — will mean the city’s schools receive $350 million less than they would have if nothing had changed, according to Levine.
