Chicago mayor-elect Brandon Johnson, a former teacher and labor organizer, narrowly defeated former Chicago Schools CEO Paul Vallas in a runoff election Tuesday, in what is being seen as a major win for progressive Democrats over the party's more moderate wing.

Johnson will succeed Lori Lightfoot, who became the first Chicago mayor in four decades to lose her reelection bid back in February.

Black mayors continue to lead the nation’s biggest cities, as public safety remains top of mind for many voters.

Bill Neidhardt, an adviser to the Johnson campaign, and who previously served as a press secretary under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, joined Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to discuss more.
