The City Council held a hearing Tuesday investigating the rapid increase of vacant apartments in the city's public housing system.
City Councilmember Alexa Avilés, who represents parts of Brooklyn and chairs the City Council's public housing committee, joined Errol Louis on "Inside City Hall" Tuesday to discuss the hearing and the state of NYCHA.
Currently, there are about 6,000 homes that remain vacant, out of about 161,000. The vacancy rate is 3.7%, which is up from the 1.9% in February 2022.
And the higher vacancy rate comes as the city's shelter system faces stress from the ongoing migrant crisis.
