A delegation of City Council members recently took a trip to Washington to meet with officials and congressional members about migrants arriving in the city.

This comes as the city says more than 48,000 migrants are currently in their care.

Meanwhile, the cost of housing the migrants is affecting ongoing budget negotiations, with the deadline rapidly approaching at the end of the month.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams joined Errol Louis on "Inside City Hall" Wednesday to discuss the trip last week to Washington and explain how the federal government can help the city by giving migrants work authorization.

"We know that this is most certainly a crisis in the city. It has been for quite some time now. We are looking at different pieces of this puzzle to try to help this situation along," Adams said. "One of the main things that we want to talk about, or spoke with our leaders about, had to do with work permission."

Adams also talked about Daniel Penny being indicted by a grand jury in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely, an expected procedural step that will allow the criminal case to continue.

"There was a moment there where [Penny] should have stopped before he rendered this person lifeless," Adams said. "I think [the grand jury] did the right thing."
