Today's Big Stories

1. NYC reports first juvenile monkeypox case

A child in the five boroughs has tested positive for monkeypox, marking the city’s first juvenile case since the outbreak began, officials said Friday.

The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported the case Friday morning. The child contracted the illness via a household contact, the department said.

2. City-owned Trump golf course to host controversial tournament: report

A Bronx golf course managed by the Trump Organization will host a controversial tournament with ties to Saudi Arabia’s government, according to a report — despite opposition from the city, which owns the green.

The Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point will serve as the site of a women’s tournament that is part of the Saudi-backed Aramco Team Series, the New York Times reported Friday.

The city owns the course and reportedly authorized the tournament, but Mayor Eric Adams’ administration opposes the event, his press secretary, Fabien Levy, said Friday.

3. Biden's student loan plan: What we know (and what we don't)

Under a new plan announced by President Joe Biden, many Americans can have up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt forgiven. That amount increases to $20,000 if they qualified for Pell grants. Here's a break down of what we know so far and what it means for people with outstanding student loans.

4. Notorious B.I.G. mural vandalized in Brooklyn

Police are investigating after a Notorious B.I.G. mural was vandalized in the rapper’s home borough of Brooklyn.

The mural, located on St. James Place and Fulton Street in Clinton Hill, was defaced with black paint splattered on his face and the words “East Coast” written in red spray paint.

5. FBI believed it might find classified docs, evidence of obstruction at Mar-a-Lago, affidavit says

The FBI believed there was probable cause agents would find classified documents in a search of former President Donald Trump’s home, according to a heavily redacted affidavit unsealed Friday, plus potential evidence of obstruction of the investigation into those documents.

The affidavit, written by an FBI special agent with personal knowledge of the documents taken to Mar-a-Lago, says the investigation involves the “improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized spaces, as well as the unlawful concealment or removal of government records.”

6. Parts of NYC are facing ‘severe’ drought conditions

After months of drier than usual conditions, all of New York City is facing drought conditions, the New York branch of the National Weather Service said Thursday.

Parts of southern Brooklyn and southern Queens, and all of Staten Island, are experiencing “severe drought” conditions, while the Bronx, Manhattan, and other parts of Queens and Brooklyn are seeing “moderate drought” conditions, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center.

7. Asbestos found in pipes at East River Park sparks concerns

Construction crews working on the project to rebuild East River Park have paused demolition on the park’s amphitheater after discovering asbestos at the site.

The discovery comes after activists who have long opposed the project raised concerns about dust and other particulate matter that have been carried by wind from the construction area into the residential neighborhoods alongside the park.
