A woman who was hit by a car on Staten Island Friday morning died after the ambulance taking her to the hospital drove the wrong way down a one-way street and was involved in a crash, the NYPD said.
Maria Elena-Andres Martinez, 35, was crossing Jewett Avenue, at the intersection of Keiber Court in Westerleigh, around 6:10 a.m. when a driver in a Dodge Charger hit her, leaving her in critical condition, the NYPD said.
The driver stayed at the scene, and EMS workers arrived in an ambulance to take the woman to the hospital, police said.
As the ambulance was traveling on Maine Avenue, however, a Jeep heading west on Jewett Avenue hit the emergency vehicle, according to police. Police say the ambulance was going the wrong way down a one-way street.
Andres Martinez and three EMS workers were taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where the three first responders were listed in stable condition, the NYPD said.
The woman passed away at the hospital, police said.
The Jeep driver was listed in stable condition at Staten Island North Hospital, according to police. The extent of the injuries sustained by the Jeep driver and the EMS workers wasn't immediately clear.
No one had been arrested in connection with either crash as of early Friday afternoon, the NYPD said. An investigation is ongoing.
