The city will start picking up Staten Islanders’ used textiles and batteries by appointment this month.

The Department of Sanitation is rolling out curbside textile and battery collection as part of a pilot program aimed at expanding its “special waste” collection service, the agency said in a press release Thursday.

Staten Island residents can schedule collection appointments by calling 311 or filling out a form on the department’s website. Pickups are set to begin on Sept. 12, the release said.

DSNY workers will collect “all kinds” of batteries and textiles — including shoes and clothes — as well as electronic waste items like old computers, televisions and DVD players, according to the release.

Residents “should put tape on the battery terminals to help prevent fires and keep our workers safe” the release noted. Items that qualify for pickup can be placed on the curb in clear plastic bags, or on their own, if they can’t fit in a bag, the release said.

Staten Island is the only borough currently participating in the pilot program. Before the program's launch, residents could only safely dispose of batteries by depositing them at designated drop-off sites.

“We are thrilled to add additional special waste items to an already successful e-waste collection program,” Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement. “The e-waste collection program has been very well received, and successfully picked up tons of unwanted electronic items from Staten Island residents.”

“Importantly, this pilot is using existing funding, in a more innovative and effective way — a win-win for residents, the city and the environment,” she added.
