STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Alternate locations are now being considered for a proposed homeless shelter on Staten Island, following a criticism from local residents and elected officials.
The proposal calls for a 200 bed shelter on Victory Boulevard in Tompkinsville.
It would be built on a site once used by the non-profit "Women in Need."
That organization's CEO, Christine Quinn, will review other sites along with City Councilwoman Debi Rose and Social Services Commissioner Steve Banks.
Rose expressed her frustration with the location after she said she was never consulted.
There were also safety concerns from nearby residents.
The area has long been a source of complaints for panhandling, public drinking and drug use.
