An airplane bumped into another while backing up at John F. Kennedy Airport early Wednesday, prompting both to be taken out of service, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
No one was injured, according to the FAA, when JetBlue Flight 1603 came into “light contact” with a parked, unoccupied aircraft around 7 a.m.
The plane was scheduled to fly to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It returned to the gate and the flight was assigned to another aircraft, the FAA said.
The FAA said Flight 1603 struck the tail of the parked aircraft, but did not specify the extent of the damage to either plane. Both were Airbus 320.
Both airplanes have since been taken out of service for inspection, according to JetBlue.
“Safety is JetBlue's first priority, and both aircraft involved will be taken out of service for inspection and the incident will be investigated,” the airliner said in a statement.
The FAA will lead the investigation.
