Former Mets shortstop José Reyes offically announced his retirement from baseball on Wednesday.

Reyes spent 12 of his 16 years in the majors with the New York Mets.

He started and ended his career in Queens, spending his first nine and his final three seasons with the Mets. He has not played in the majors since 2018.

In his announcement, Mets fans recieved a special thank you from Reyes.

"Mets fans, what can I say? We never got the ring we hoped we would get, but I can't imagine playing in front of any better fans in the whole world," Reyes wrote.

Reyes also played for the Miami Marlins, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Colorado Rockies.

His Rockies tenure ended after he was arrested for a domestic violence incident involving his wife in Hawaii in October 2015. Charges were ulitmately dropped after Reyes' wife did not cooperate with authorities, but he was suspended for the first 51 games of the 2016 season, and the Rockies released him in June. He then rejoined the Mets.

Reyes was major part of the 2006 Mets team that was the first Mets team to win their division in 18 years. The team ultimately lost in the National League Championship Series.

In his time with the Mets, Reyes made four All-Star appearances, won the 2011 batting title with a .337 average, won a Silver Slugger award in 2006, and led the National League in steals for three seasons in a row.

He is the Mets' all-time leader in stolen bases and triples, and is second all-time in at-bats, hits, doubles and runs scored as a Met, behind David Wright.
