Police say they are looking for a man who tied up a 13-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy at knifepoint in Kissena Park Thursday and then sexually assaulted the girl.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Friday afternoon that the teens were walking in the park around 3 p.m. when an unidentified man approached them and demanded they follow him into the woods. When the teens refused, the man displayed a “large machete-style knife” and forced them to follow him into a secluded area in the park, Kenny said.

The man tied the teens’ wrists together with a shoelace and then sexually assaulted the girl, police said. The man fled the scene with the children’s cellphones, Kenny said.

The teens were transported to an area hospital in stable condition, police said.

“This incident is a parent’s nightmare, and all the communities should be very upset about this, and willing to have come out and help the police department as we try to resolve this issue,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Jeffrey Maddrey said at the news briefing. “I want our communities, I want the family to be, I want them to rest assured that we will spare no expense, and we will use every investigative resource.”

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered by police for information on the man, officials said.

Kenny said the man is identified by police as in his 20s, approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with curly hair, dental braces on his teeth, and a tattoo with red eyes and horns on the left side of his chest. The man was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black sweatpants and red sneakers, and carrying a green backpack, Kenny said.

He said a shoelace and a water bottle were recovered at the scene. Both items are being processed by “forensic evidence,” Kenny said.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Operations Kaz Daughtry said two drone teams will go to the area to provide an “aerial view” that will be monitored by police. Cameras will also be installed around the area, Daughtry said.
