A whale was found dead on Rockaway Beach Friday morning, marking the fifth time a large whale has stranded in New York in less than three months, officials said.
The whale was discovered on the shoreline at Beach 29th Street around 9 a.m., a spokesperson for the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation said.
The creature was about 15 to 20 feet long and had “several wounds across its body,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement.
The parks department said it is working in concert with NOAA, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation on “a plan for examination and disposal.”
“Biologists are making plans to examine the animal this afternoon as tides allow,” NOAA said in its statement. “Biologists will confirm its length and species, and document all visible injuries during their examination.”
Twenty-three large whales have stranded on the east coast since Dec. 1, including five in New York, according to NOAA.
One of those whales, a 30-foot sperm whale, was found dead on Rockaway Beach in mid-December, officials said.
