QUEENS, N.Y. — Rockaway Beach has reopened to swimmers after being shut down for the second straight day due to shark sightings.
Beaches opened to the public at 10 a.m. Friday.
The beach closed around 1 p.m. Thursday and never reopened.
The first reported shark sightings were Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the city parks department said swimmers were told to stay out of the water that because of multiple reported sightings on the length of the beach.
Just last month, a lifeguard at Jones Beach thought a shark bit him, forcing people out of the water.
The parks department warns swimmers to only enter the water when lifeguards are on duty.
