QUEENS, N.Y. - Street cleaning begins in part of western Astoria on Monday for the first time ever.
It follows a 20-year fight to bring cleaning services to the neighborhood.
Alternate side parking rules are now in effect between Astoria Boulevard South and Broadway, and from the East River to 21st Street.
The impacted area is near Astoria Park, by the RFK Bridge along the East River.
Depending on the area, residents will need to move their cars by 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., or 11:30 a.m. twice a week.
In the past, there have been complaints about too many people not moving their cars for days and weeks on end.
"They leave the car like for weeks and weeks at a time, so now that they put the signs, we're hoping that it's going to be moved and you can park your car and you don't have to go around because there's a lot of cars now. Parking. It's hard to get parking here," said one neighborhood resident.
Residents have spent over two decades fighting to get street cleaning services in the neighborhood, complaining of trash piling up.
Moving forward, a $45 ticket will be issued for those violating street cleaning rules.
