The NYPD is investigating a string of robberies and assaults they believe are related.

Investigators believe people in gay nightclubs in Hell’s Kitchen are being targeted.

“There really are no words to describe it. It’s absolute anguish and grief,” Linda Clary said.

She is the mother of one of two victims who are believed to have been killed during these incidents.

Police found her son, 33-year-old John Umberger, dead back in June.

Investigators said they believe he is one of multiple people who have been targeted with the motive of stealing thousands from the victims.

Umberger’s accounts were drained. Clary said about $23,000 was taken.

“So, in the whole scheme of things. When you look at someone’s life, that, that’s you know… I would give that and a million times more to have John back,” she said.

Umberger was last seen alone at the Q NYC nightclub on 8th Avenue before he died.

His story was similar to one that happened six weeks prior to his death.

That victim believed to have been targeted two blocks away at another gay bar, The Ritz Bar and Lounge.

Julio Ramirez, 25, was last seen there, before police found him on the Lower East Side unresponsive in the back of a taxi.

He died, and thousands of dollars were also taken from his accounts.

Clary said her son was out with friends, but separated from them the night he was targeted and possibly drugged.

“He was alone. That is one of the most important single factors of what happened to Julio and what happened to John. What seems to have happened to the other young men,” she said.

According to Clary, police telling her there have been at least a dozen more similar incidents.

There’s now concern in the community known too many for its LGBTQ bars.

“Sadly, the LGBTQ community has been targeted time and time again historically, and that’s what’s happening now. Even here in New York City,” City Councilmember Erik Bottcher said.

Bottcher, who represents Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea and the West Village, is working with the city’s Office of Nightlife to spread flyers with safety tips to bars.

“The safety in numbers stay in a group when possible. Watch your drink, watch your drink and don’t leave it unattended. If you’re leaving with someone that you don’t know, make sure you give your friends as much information as possible,” Bottcher said.

Several units within the NYPD and the New York County District Attorney’s Office are working to catch the people responsible.

“If he had not been gay, he would never have been that blessing and who he was. So being gay was such a central, key, important blessing, part of who he was. And I don’t want to see any other parent or anybody else traumatized like we have been,” Clary said.

According to the medical examiner’s office, they are still investigating the cause of death for both cases.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information to come forward.
